This town was established on the land of an ancient Gallo-Roman villa. The owner was called Ciconis and the villa Ciconiacum, meaning "private villa".
The present name was chosen during the 17th c. Some of the small hamlets include : Le Bouchet; Les Pallus, previously belonging to the Chartreux of Liget ; Charlé previously belonging to the Archbishop of Tours ; Villepou once belonging to St Martin de Tours.
