This town was established on the land of an ancient Gallo-Roman villa. The owner was called Ciconis and the villa Ciconiacum, meaning ''private villa''.
The present name was chosen during the 17th c. Some of the smallhamlets include: Le Bouchet; Les Pallus, previously belonging to the Chartreux of Liget; Charlé previously belonging to the Archbishop of Tours; Villepou once belonging to St Martin de Tours.
